Galileo was Wrong 2

Colossians 2v6-10

As you have therefore received Christ Jesus

the Lord, so walk in Him,

rooted and built up in Him and established in

the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in

tradition of men, according to the basic

principles of the world, and not according to

Notice the comment by the Apostle that it is possible to be ‘cheated’ out of the special relationship and confidence which God has achieved for you.  The danger comes from a particular combination: sophisticated speculation allied to deliberate misleading over basic understandings of the universe.  The text actually says “world” since that term would include everything involved with the earth.

Sometimes Christians think that this stuff is not really relevant to their Christian experience.  In one sense that is true. Once we have established the relationship we move onto more mature things   But because the influence of this kind of pagan understanding of the universe extends through the whole of our understanding of, and confidence in the Word of God we need to deal with it. Secularism and its dominance in our society is the proof that left unchallenged it will submerge the truth of Christ because of its contrary truth claims.  

We need to challenge this ‘empty deceit’ not only for our own sake, but also to build confidence in those needing to be saved.   God is Creator and a good reliable one in every way.  

Traditions of men indicate that this kind of thinking is not new and definitely not of God. It can be traced back in written form to the early Greeks.

Joshua 10 v12-14

On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to

Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence

of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O

moon, over the Valley of Aijalon."

So the sun stood still, and the moon

stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its

enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar.

The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and

delayed going down about a full day.

There has never been a day like it before or

since, a day when the LORD listened to a man.

Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!

This is one of those texts which has been disregarded because of the above deceit.  The Christian Church has deemed this text purely ‘phenomenological’ ie it was only what Joshua saw and observed, maybe a miracle but not a real description of the mechanics taking place.

But notice that in the first instance he records what happened. That could be termed ‘phenomenological’ but then Joshua records it as the inspired writer as to details of what occurred in the actual event.  

The Church took it this way without dissent until some time after the Copernicus and Galileo events when opinion changed and thereafter the scriptures were never interpreted with confidence: God could not speak through his chosen servants with accuracy on physical or scientific matters. As Galileo is reported to have said that the “Holy Scriptures were written to inform us how to get to heaven not how the heavens go.”  Such was the beginning of the division in the church and society between spiritual truth (scripture) and physical truth (men’s traditions) and when the two conflicted the scriptures always come off worse.

As Einstein had to admit it could be either and the intellectual depth of that Biblical option is rigorously suppressed .. even by the Church!

2Kings 20:9

And Isaiah said, "This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he has promised: shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or go back ten steps?" 2Ki 20:10  And Hezekiah answered, "It is an easy thing for the shadow to lengthen ten steps. Rather let the shadow go back ten steps." 2Ki 20:11  And Isaiah the prophet called to the LORD, and he brought the sun back ten steps, by which it had gone down on the steps of Ahaz. 2Ki 20:12  At that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent envoys with letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that Hezekiah had been sick.

The prophet Isaiah and king Hezekiah in a remarkable situation.  Its a miracle whichever way you look at it.  The King was going to get healed. This was the sign of the promise.  What happened: the shadow goes back ten steps. What could make that happen?  Did the earth stop spinning one way and start going backwards or is it the reverse scenario. Christians who accept the earth is orbiting and spinning have to accept the astonishing concept of that happening.

The alternative is much more reasonable: if the whole system was set up to have the earth in a special place and created for habitation. A highly sophisticated system of which the earth is always stationary in scripture and the sun always moving.

If someone objects that the speeds involved are ridiculously high then keep in mind that the red shift at the extremities of the universe indicates speeds of expansion (in that view) of 10 to the power 12 the speed of light.  

This  scenario is explained away in the standard cosmology by saying that there is no centre to the universe and that the relative expansion or growing into the universe is less that the speed of light.  

You might want to jump forward at this point to the underlined links below. These are results from the Cobi, WMAP and Planck satellites which were looking at the whole universe and embarrassingly reported indications that the earth was in the centre of the universe.  You do have to be able to read the coded language because they won’t report directly .. Instead we read of a ‘preferred direction in space’ and ‘an axis of evil’ all of which breaks the Comsological/Copernican Principle and in the words of the director of the European Space Agency requires a ‘new physics’ .  It does indeed but will they come clean and admit what it really means or will they just devise another workaround to avoid the implications.

2 Chronicles 32:31 32

And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to try him and to know all that was in his heart. Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

Apparently, whilst the sign was intended for Hezekiah the nature of the sign ie the sun going backwards was of such note that another kingdom who were particularly interested and organised in the matters of the heavens had to investigate.  The breadth of reporting is here indicated.  Not an obscure miracle but noteworthy because it also broke the back of the idolatry of the Babylonians who worshipped the sun.

Isaiah 38:7-8 7

“This is the sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will do this thing that he has promised: 8 Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun on the dial of Ahaz turn back ten steps.” So the sun turned back on the dial the ten steps by which it had declined

Ihis is the Spirit of Christ inspired words of Isaiah both in promise and comment on the event.

The sun turned back on the dial.  Not just the shadow but the sun moved backwards. Just as Jesus was able to calm the storm, reverse illnesses and create food so we have the same kind of power applied to the heavens.  Should it be any more difficult for God to do?  But for centuries now Christians have given up on this area for God to speak with authority in His Word.

Psalm 93:1-2

The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength. Yea, the world is established; it shall never be moved. thy throne is established from of old; thou art from everlasting.

Now it is the context of the previous data and biblical comments looked at so far that we interpret these statements.  They can be take at a straightforward interpretation of the comparison between God’s throne and the world (earth) of which neither move or else we lose the force of the comparison.  We do not need to allegorise in order to get the sense. It becomes much simpler.  2Corinthians 11:3  I am afraid that your minds will be corrupted and that you will abandon your full and pure devotion to Christ---in the same way that Eve was deceived by the serpent’s clever lies.

Psalm 96:9-11

Worship the Lord in holy array; tremble before him, all the earth! Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns! Yea, the world is established, it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.” Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;

This similar passage to the above is mostly interpreted by allegorising as to the continuance of human society by God’s decree. But the consistent Biblical attitude in every part of scripture where movement of the earth is concerned… there is none and but the sun is always moving … unless there is a miracle.  The certainty of God’s justice and fairness is compared with the absolute stability of the earth … which was never in doubt in scripture. However the continuance of human society and structures is not a comparison that makes sense in terms of the certainty and fairness of God’s judgements.  Rather the way in which he created and fitted the earth for life by its stability is a better example.

Psalm 119:89-91

For ever, O Lord, thy word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Thy faithfulness endures to all generations; thou hast established the earth, and it stands fast. By thy appointment they stand this day; for all things are thy servants.

Note the comparison in the text the non moving and fixity of God’s word.  He is faithful … there is no shadow of turning with God (James 1v17) and the fixity of the earth .. It stands fast.  The straightforward analogy always works and is totally consistent with everything else in the scriptures. Now with the information we have available to us about the earth’s position in the Universe and Eistein’s admission that the alternative must be possible why should Christians doubt anymore the authoritative Word of God in this matter.

Athanasius: For the Sun is carried round along with,and is contained in, the whole heaven, and can never go beyond his own orbit, while the moon and other stars testify to the assistance given them by the Sun? But the earth is not supported upon itself, but is set upon the realm of the waters, while this again is kept in its place, being bound fast at the center of the universe.

Against the Heathen, Part 1, No. 27.

Athanasius you may recall was the Bishop who resisted the Arian ideas of Jesus being merely a created being and not ‘one with the Father’. He was regarded highly in the early church of the 4th Century and this view on the sun and its movement was typical of the early church fathers. They were quite unanimous on this point. They also maintained this approach against the heathen who were pushing  the Greek ideas of a heliocentric (sun at the centre) universe.  I recall my Church history lecturer of the 1970’s saying he could never understand why the early fathers included so much stuff about cosmology in their writings.  Those early fathers were quite aware of the nature of the threat posed by these ideas.  They did not have just an allegorical faith in which the spiritual truth was important.  They knew with Jesus that if they were not speaking the truth on the physical matters on which the scriptures touched then no one would listen to them on spiritual matters. John 3v12 This is why Secular Humanism has so much traction and authority in our culture.  It’s tenets of creation are virtually unopposed in our churches.

Augustine of Hippo: “But more dangerous is the error of certain weak brethren who faint away when they hear these irreligious critics learnedly and eloquently discoursing on the theories of astronomy or on any of the questions relating to the elements of this universe. With a sigh, they esteem these teachers as superior to themselves, looking upon them as great men; and they return with disdain to the books which were written for the good of their souls; and, although they ought to drink from these books with relish, they can scarcely bear to take them up.”

What an accurate description of the church today.  Bible Fresh was supposed to reintroduce us to reading the scriptures but no one dealt with the issues on which Augustine put his finger.  We never dealt with the Hawking issue or the Brian Cox issue.  You had to be taught carefully as you will be if you read digest and research further the material on this website in order to know that Brian Cox was very astute when he presented the opposite case for the earth spinning and orbiting the sun.  So astute that you never even noticed that he had allowed for it … by using the word ‘better’ in describing the heliocentric case.  That was it. The result: young men and old women everywhere are picking up telescopes and forgetting that the scriptures speak the real truth.

Fred Hoyle: “We might hope therefore that the Einstein theory, which is well suited to such problems, would throw more light on the matter. But instead of adding further support to the heliocentric picture of the planetary motions, the Einstein theory goes in the opposite direction, giving increased respectability to the geocentric picture. The relation of the two pictures is reduced to a mere coordinate transformation, and it is the main tenet of the Einstein theory that any two ways of looking at the world which are related to each other by a coordinate transformation are entirely equivalent from a physical point of view.

Fred Hoyle, Nicolaus Copernicus: An Essay on His Life and Work , p. 87.Harper and Row, New York, 1973 .

Highly respected but sometimes controversial Fred Hoyle admits what should be obvious from Einstein’s relativity theories. We do not need to disrespect God and his ability to communicate through the words confirmed by Jesus, the apostles and the prophets.  We have disrespected God and are paying the price for it.  Repent!

Alexander von Humboldt (d.1859), the founder of modern geography and of whom Charles Darwin said that he was “the greatest scientific traveler who ever lived,” and, of whom, after his death, Geoffrey Martin said “no individual scholar could hope any longer to master the world’s knowledge about the Earth,”

 “I have known, too, for a long time, that we have no arguments for the Copernican system, but I shall never dare to be the first to attack it. Don’t rush into the wasp’s nest.You will but bring upon yourself the scorn of the thoughtless multitude. If once a famous astronomer arises against the present conception, I will communicate, too, my observations; but to come forth as the first against opinions which the world has become fond of – I don’t feel the courage.”

It has been the intention of wicked men as the apostle Paul writes to suppress the knowledge which clearly identifies an astonishing Creator and instead supplant their own dead ideas which have led to chaos in cosmology. The present situation of cosmology is crisis: not knowing what nothing is (there was nothing, nothing exploded and became everything) alias the Big Bang) and inventing incredible numbers of universes (multiverse) to try to explain how they have lost 95% of this universe.  As Paul says “thinking themselves wise they have become fools” Romans 1v22.

What is not an option for Christians is the attitude of this very clever man .”I don’t feel the courage”.  What are we going to say to Jesus, who gave himself for us and set us free from condemnation, “they would have laughed at me”  If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us. 2Timothy 2v12.

“Earth ..at Rest”

“By the time of physicist Henrick Lorentz in the early 1890s, it was obvious to many what the experimental results were saying. In Lorentz’s own words: “Briefly, everything occurs as if the Earth were at rest? ””

Lorentz’s 1886 paper, “On the Influence of the Earth’s Motion on Luminiferous Phenomena,” quoted in Miller’s Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity , p. 20.

This was the logical conclusion from the results of the Michelson Morley experiments of the 1880’s (and which have continued) to find the motion of the earth through space.  They didn’t get the results wanted and it was left to Einstein to reinvent physics with his theories of relativity to get round the problem and keep the earth moving.  But before that happened this is a genuine expression of what was being observed.  Completely consistent with the Biblical text but unacceptable to the secularists and atheists who were dominating this branch of science.

“Axis of Evil”

“What they found contradicted the standard inflationary cosmology – the hemispheres often had very different amounts of power. But what was most surprising was that the pair of hemispheres that were the most different were the ones lying above and below the ecliptic, the plane of the earth’s orbit around the sun. This result was the first sign that the CMB fluctuations, which were supposed to be cosmological in origin? have a solar system signal in them that is, a type of observational artifact.” The significance of Eriksen’s finding may go over the heads of most people not familiar with astrophysical language, but the simple interpretation is that all the radiation in the universe, whether it is symmetric or asymmetric, is centered around the Earth (although because Eriksen is a Copernican he refers to it as “the plane of the earth’s orbit around the sun”). This is confirmed when Schwarz, et al., state later: “Within that plane, they sit unexpectedly close to the equinoxes – the two points on the sky where the projection of the earth’s equator onto the sky crosses the ecliptic.” In other words, all the data show that, as far out as our telescopes can see, space is oriented geocentrically. What are the chances that this could happen by accident? The team of Copernicans has to admit that the “combined chance probability is certainly less than one in 10,000.” So upsetting is this evidence to the scientific status quo that another magazine, New Scientist , labeled the same universal orientation around Earth’s equatorial plane as, “THE AXIS OF EVIL,” since this geocentric picture virtually destroys its cherished Copernican principle.”

Now we are coming to some of the most recent and most accurate cosmological data.  Surprise, surprise the ideas which Hubble, Hawking etc had regarding the likely isotropic homogeneity (looks the same from everywhere on the large scale) of the universe is shown to be false.  

Make no mistake about this, this is the breaking of the Copernican Principle and that the assumptions of Modern Physicists are wrong.  The whole foundation of modern cynicism about the Bible’s ability to speak the truth in physical matters is shown to be a work of wicked godlessness.  They chose to assume that the earth could not be in the centre and it was moving despite all evidence to the contrary.  Their cosmological models are in hopeless confusion because they chose to ignore the truth which would glorify God.  What else could they do but call “good evil” and so we have the ‘Axis of Evil’.

Planck Satellite results and Lawrence Krauss

The first popularly published reports of findings from the Planck satellite (March 2013), the follow up satellite from the Wilkinson Ansitropy Probe and the Cobi Satellite, found with more accuracy the same phenomena a preferred direction in space which was reported as an “axis of evil” and required a “new physics” to explain. (New Scientist website) Lawrence Krauss cosmologist, advisor to Barack Obama on scientific matters and a winner of national scientific awards, said in 2006 of the previous satellites findings:

“ But when you look at [the cosmic microwave background] map, you also see that the structure that is observed, is in fact, in a weird way, correlated with the plane of the earth around the sun. Is this Copernicus coming back to haunt us? That's crazy. We're looking out at the whole universe. There's no way there should be a correlation of structure with our motion of the earth around the sun — the plane of the earth around the sun — the ecliptic. This leading cosmologist said that because he thought the results were the consequence of inaccuracies in measurements and would be rectified by later probes. The Planck probe confirmed with incredible accuracy the ‘preferred direction in space’ and the earth at the ‘center of the universe’ The evidence is in again.  The scriptures which God has inspired do not need to be subject to the passing whims of people who set themselves up as experts but will not admit the truth of what they claim to know.

Have you the courage to point these things out to your friends, sons, daughters, dads, brothers work colleagues, church friends, church leaders.

Morality

Now we see the effects of this posturing, half truths, denials, suppression and academic poverty:  the Bible is unreliable.  Because Jesus obviously does not know the truth about how the world and universe was made then he cannot tell us how to live our lives. Moral relativity and chaos is the result of the failure of the church to proclaim all of God’s words to be true.

NASA

NASA’s assumption for the Big Bang etc “Given the assumption that the matter in the universe is homogeneous and isotropic (The Cosmological Principle) it can be shown…

Given a law of gravity and an assumption (the Cosmological Principle) about how the matter is distributed, the next step is to work out the dynamics of the universe, how space and the matter in it evolves with time.

The above quotes present on the NASA website as of 4/02/2014 at the above address show the absolute dependence on one assumption.  It is necessary, in order to understand the full weight of this dependence, to read down until it says, “Thus far, the only assumption we have made about the universe…“

Now notice how much depends upon that assumption:

1) the size of the universe

2) the dynamics of the universe: how it is supposed to have evolved.

3) the age of the universe.

That very important assumption which Copernicus suggested, Galileo believed and of which the world and NASA spend their billions of dollars trying to prove … is but sand.  The evidence is in again and again.
